FEATURE ARTICLE - Steve Richards
Singer\Songwriter
Steve Richards was born in Los Angeles, California in
1955.Residing in Arizona, Steve's love of music came at a very
early age when he tried his hand at writing lyrics to an old
Beau Brummels song titled (Laugh, Laugh). He was hooked. After a
hitch in the United States Air Force, during the latter part of
the Viet Nam war, Steve's love for songwriting and guitar
playing became apparent as he began crafting songs from his
everyday life and from observations around him. In the late 90's
Steve met Gary Buck, President of the Canadian Country Music
Hall of Fame and owner of Broadland International Records in
Nashville. Gary helped guide Steve in bringing his
inspirations
to life.
Steve's upcoming
CD Release "Southbound Train" is truly a labor of love
that Steve has painstakingly crafted into his own Masterpiece.
The Southbound tracks penned by Steve, bring to you a visual
adventure that reminds the listener of Steve's all time
favorite
songwriters - Harry Chapin and Justin Hayward. Steve is
able
to weave tales of romance and adventure with songs of happiness
and sorrow. Deeply inspiring, sometimes spiritually moving is
how Steve's songs have been described. With
a never before released Buddy Holly song titled "That Makes
It Tough" (www.buddyholly.com) along with Nashville
songwriter, Scott Turner's tear rendering tribute to Marty
Robbins
"West Texas Tears" Steve has been able to capture the
essence of a by-gone era. The title cut "SOUTHBOUND
TRAIN" is a story about a ghost, eternally trapped on a
train. He's trying to get back to his true love, only to find
out he's just that, "A
GHOST!" With
even more surprises in store, "SOUTHBOUND TRAIN" is
sure to have a little something for everyone! Enjoy!

PRESS RELEASE -
MULTI-TALENTED
SINGER/SONGWRITER STEVE RICHARDS TEAMS WITH FORMER MEGADETH
MEMBERS TO RECORD BUDDY HOLLY SONG.
August 6, 2002
For Immediate
Release
Phoenix, AZ -
Nashville recording artist Steve Richards gathers a crossroad of
musicians including bassist Dave Ellefson and lead guitarist
Marty Friedman of Megadeth fame along with his Nashville
friend's keyboardist Jimmy Nichols and pedal steel guitarist
Mike Smith to record "That Makes It Tough", one of the
last songs written by Buddy Holly. Additional musicians include
Mike Andrews on drums with Richards on vocals and rhythm guitar.
The musicians have scheduled their recording session on Sunday,
August 11th in the Phoenix area.
Buddy Holly
originally recorded "That Makes It Tough" on "The
Apartment Tapes" as he was taking his music into a new
rhythm and blues direction shortly before his death. Steve
Richards encompasses the history of Buddy's musical background
combining country, rock n' roll, and rhythm and blues that is
destined to set
a new trend in the music industry.
Richards'
upcoming CD release "Southbound Train" reflects his
Singer/Songwriter talents as his music wisps through the
"Arizona Skies" and dances on the rails with the title
tune "Southbound Train". The river of emotions runs
deep with the heart wrenching songs
of "Take Me To The Rain" and "Crisis In Our
Land". Steve Richards
shares the producer spotlight on all but two of this project's
songs with Canadian Country Music Hall of Famer Gary Buck who
also provides vocals on the upbeat down home-style song
"Hurry
Road". Lindsey Frese soars to great heights as she sings a
duet with Richards in the love song "The Eagle and The
Rose" and Marty Robbins is remembered in "West Texas
Tears", an unforgettable
tribute written by Scott Turner.
Additional tracks
on the 12-song effort include "Mama", "Glory
Bound", "Elijah Blue", and 'The Rainbow
Warrior". The keen ear, steady hand, watchful eye and
creative mind of Nashville's Tom Pick have been recruited for
engineering duties. Pick has engineered projects by Janie Fricke,
Porter Wagoner, Waylon Jennings, Elvis Presley and Charlie
Pride, to name just a few. John Gray also engineered several of
the recording sessions and lends his guitar expertise to
"Take Me To The Rain". Steve Richards' musical
inspirations began during his formative years when he spent much
time traveling between California and Arizona. His first guitar
was given to him by his late Uncle John.
Throughout his lifetime, Richards drew upon his experiences and
soul-stirring landscapes to write his songs. Some of his most
prolific music is spurred by some profound life memories
including his four-year United States Air Force stint where he
served in Weisbaden, Germany and attended every concert he
could; his desire to jump trains as influenced by the Woody
Guthrie
documentary "Bound for Glory"; his great admiration
for John Lennon; the ten years he and his wife Victoria spent
taking care of abandoned children; the effect cancer Survivors
had on his emotions with their words of hope and personal
courage; and the place he calls home - Arizona, USA.

2001 along with his good friend Gordon Lightfoot. 2001 Canadian
Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee: Gary Buck Born in 1940 in
Thessalon, Ontario, Gary Buck began his career as a singer and
country music performer. By the early 1960's Buck had recorded
Bobby Bare's "Happy To Be Unhappy" with the help of a
Nashville DJ, and watched it climb to a #1 hit. He was the first
Canadian to record a #1 in the U.S., while living and working in
Canada. Buck was first signed to "Petal Records", and
moved on to Capitol where he released multiple albums and top
ten chart singles.
While next with
RCA, Buck established "Beechwood Music of Canada" for
Capitol, and signed many major hit songs, such as
"Snowbird", "Put Your Hand In The Man", and
"Countryfied". Gary Buck was named top male country
singer 5 times in Canada, and
won numerous awards for producer of the year for work with
artists such as "The Family Brown" and "Dick
Damron". Buck spent several years as Director of the CMA in
Nashville, and was one of the founding directors of the Canadian
Country Music Association. (www.ccma.org)
In 1979 Buck
began the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1999 he joined forces
with the CCMA and its "Hall of Honour", for the
creation of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. This year
he will be recognized with his own place, in a Hall of Fame he
helped to build. Gary Buck continues to write, record, publish
and produce internationally - splitting his time between his
home in Canada, and Nashville.

Gordon Lightfoot will be inducted into the Canadian Country
Music Hall Of Fame during the 2001 Canadian Country Music Week
celebrations in Calgary, September 7th to 10th. The Canadian

Hall of Famer Gary Buck has pretty much experienced a "been
there - done that" career in his four-plus decades
on the recording scene. Country Gospel music is not a style that
Gary Buck is first identified with, but he handles the genre
with the same smoothness as his more recognizable offerings in
pure country and Texas Swing. Not surprisingly, Gary Buck's
ultra-mellow
vocal style is perfectly suited to singing 'country gospel'
music, and many of the selections on Don't Be Standin' On The
Outside, his first gospel album, are not only inspirational in
message but also a delight to the ear.
Country Gospel
music in itself is not a new venture for Gary Buck - he has
previously produced numerous Gospel music sessions, most notably
the 2-CD, 28-song 1998 High Country project by Nashville's
George Hamilton IV, and Buck's comfort zone with the style of
music is a key to the success of this album. The album's title
track, Don't Be Standin' On The Outside is a new Country Gospel
song composed by Gary Buck himself, and it is a powerful piece,
deserving of much more than just Sunday morning airplay. Buck
also co-wrote two other songs here - The Road To Heaven and His
Light, both with David Johnson, who's other contribution, The
Upper Hand, rates among the highlight moments
on the album.
Two songs, It
Ain't That Way and Lord, and I'm Glad That You Are God were both
previously recorded by George Hamilton IV on his High Country
album. Other recognizable songs come in a 'new millennium'
re-working of Canadian songwriter Artie MacLaren's
Where
Would John Baptize Jesus (the original song was also previously
done by Porter Wagoner); the Bill Mack-penned classic Clinging
To A Saving Hand (cut by everyone from Conway Twitty to LeAnn
Rimes); and the only gospel standard on the album; Just A Closer
Walk With Thee.
Don't Be Standin'
On The Outside was recorded at Nashville's Merit Studios with
Grammy award winner Tom Pick engineering; and session work by
such 'name' pickers as Leo Jackson, Gregg Galbraith, Sonny
Garrish, Buddy Emmons, Rob Hajacos,
Aubrey Haynie, etc. etc. It all adds up to a very impressive and
enjoyable listen... and perhaps even a new musical path for Gary
Buck to travel down.
